Student Short Film

RETICENCE

Sound is all encompassing.

ABOUT RETICENCE

Logline

Reticence is a short student film based in Southampton, UK. It is a thought-provoking film that explores themes of love, loss, and self-discovery against the backdrop of a "snowy" landscape.

The film follows the journey of a young deaf protagonist through an apocalyptic word and depicts her struggles and triumphs in the darkest moment for humanity.

Reticence aims to evoke emotions and provoke thought through its storytelling.

Director's Intent

Ben Ryan, Director

Through Reticence, I wanted to explore the deep emotional solitude that can come from being shunned and left alone. I wanted to write a character based story that focuses entirely on the psyche of a young girl, aiming to highlight the loneliness that can develop if issues like hearing impairment are not addressed properly. The character of Charlotte was shaped by the emotion of loneliness, her disability leaving her spending a majority of the film completely alone, left with her own thoughts and problems.

Her experiences in the world of our film, especially her steps into the outside world, aim to reflect the confusion and upset that can come from being shunned by society and being left alone as an outsider. No help is extended to Charlotte, no help is extended to many people in day to day life. Her panic and upset due to a lack of understanding really being set in the emotions connected to being left behind, something that surely resonates with all of us.

I’ve always had a passion for the cosmic elements of the horror or thriller genre and that chaotic and mind bending environment seemed perfect to embody all these emotions, especially when they’re coming from the mind of a young girl. I wanted the environment to seem like a character, allowing the audience to take a moment to appreciate their ability to communicate well in dire situations.
